This is a picture of a pine cone, the only real difference between the male and female pine cone is that the female is larger and is found higher up in the tree. The male pine cones sit lower on the tree and are the ones that produce the pollen. The female pine cones sit up high on the tree where they produce and protect their seeds from the weather. Female pine cones can take as long as two years to mature enough to release their seeds, which are carried away by wind or animals. They become fertilized when the male pine cones release their pollen and it can come into contact with the seed.
