Photo Blog #11 (Heartwood)

IMG_5634.JPG

This is a picture of a pine tree, when a tree is cut into usable wood, it is cut in sections with a specific pattern and each part can be used for different things. The heartwood is the hardest timber in the whole trunk, it is found in the inner part of the tree (the middle). The heartwood is easily distinguished from the sapwood due to the darkness where as the sap wood is usually much lighter. Because of how strong and sturdy the heartwood is, it is most commonly used in tools such as the handles of axes and hammers.
